TRS Engages Firms to Oversee Foreign Currency Programs

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Teachers’ Retirement System Board of Trustees today hired two money management firms to initiate a new program designed to reduce the potential risk associated with stock investments based in foreign currencies.

The Board engaged Fischer, Francis, Trees and Watts, of New York, New York and Adrian Lee & Partners of London, England, to oversee a portion of the System’s foreign currency exposure and manage the associated risk of that exposure on the overall TRS portfolio.

TRS Selects Segal Consulting to Provide Actuarial Services

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Teachers’ Retirement System Board of Trustees today hired Segal Consulting to provide actuarial services to the System for the next three years.

Segal, with offices in Chicago and across the country, will assume its duties with TRS on July 1, 2016. The firm replaces the System’s previous actuary, Buck Consultants of Chicago, which had served TRS since 1988.

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Teachers’ Retirement System Board of Trustees has given final approval to a $4.813 billion state contribution to the System for fiscal year 2020, a 10.6 percent increase over the current fiscal year’s contribution.

The FY 2020 contribution falls short of the amount of money that actuaries calculate would “fully fund” the cost of TRS pensions in the new fiscal year. The FY 2020 statutory contribution is $3.065 billion below the full funding amount of $7.878 billion.

TRS to Change Telephone Numbers, Email Addresses, Website Address

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Teachers’ Retirement System is changing its telephone numbers, email addresses and website address this spring in order to improve service for members and reduce technology costs in the administration of the System.

New Email Addresses

In June, all TRS staff email addresses will change from @trs.illinois.gov to @trsil.org. For example:
OLD email: employers@trs.illinois.gov
NEW email: employers@trsil.org

TRS Posts Requests for Proposals for Investment Consulting Services

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Teachers’ Retirement System has issued two formal “request for proposals” seeking firms to provide consulting services designed to help the System make prudent investment management decisions. Illinois law requires TRS to issue an RFP for any investment consulting services at a minimum of every five years.

TRS Earns an 8.45% Rate of Investment Return in Fiscal Year 2018

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Teachers’ Retirement System investments generated a positive 8.45 percent rate of return, net of fees, during fiscal year 2018 – a return that exceeded the System’s custom investment benchmark of 8.19 percent.

TRS ended FY 2018 on June 30 with $51.5 billion in assets, an increase of 4.2 percent during the year. Gross of fees, the TRS return for FY 2018 was 9.17 percent. TRS long-term investment returns continue to exceed the System’s goal of 7 percent. For FY 2018, the 30-year net of fees return was 8.4 percent; and 9.2 percent for 40 years.
