Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Building Manager, the Building Maintenance Intern assists in the maintenance of the Teachers’ Retirement System building and grounds. 

The incumbent assists with the general maintenance of the TRS building/grounds and general clean-up.  The incumbent will also assist in the assembly/disassembly and moving of office furniture and partitions.   As needed, this position assists the mailroom with processing incoming and outgoing agency mail as well as shuttling agency cars to the state garage for service. The incumbent must have computer skills and a working knowledge of the use of related imaging software packages and the operation of scanners. 

This position requires basic knowledge of the use, care and repair of equipment used to repair and maintain the building and grounds.  This position provides assistance to the entire staff; therefore, effective interpersonal and communication skills are required.  This position requires standing, bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting.  The incumbent is required to possess a valid driver’s license.

Essential Functions:

  • Replace light bulbs throughout the TRS office building either by inspection or upon request.
  • Inspect grounds and pick up trash on a regular basis.
  • Shuttle agency cars from TRS to the state garage for service as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and boiler rooms.
  • Assist in conducting the annual physical inventory.
  • Seasonally, when necessary and assigned, operate grounds maintenance equipment; trim and mulch trees and plants; clear litter and weeds; and assist in the operating requirements of the automatic sprinkler system.
  • Assist in the relocation and/or assembly and disassembly of office furniture and partitions/dividers.
  • Assist with set-up of conference rooms by moving furniture, video, and audio equipment.
  • As needed, close; lock and secure the TRS building; conduct rounds of the premises.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Basic understanding of building maintenance, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to operate small outdoor machinery and equipment in the performance of landscape and lot maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer candidates who are pursuing degrees/certificates in the following trades/fields of study: Electrical Maintenance, Carpentry, HVAC, Construction, or other related field.
